17/11/2009

Minors: Our minors recorded the club’s most accomplished under age trophy when we overcame Latton at Scotstown in the minor division 1 league final replay, 2-09 to 0-14, last Saturday.

With the wind on our backs, we started the game strongly going three points in front after 11 minutes, with scores from Darren McClennaghan, Christopher McKenna and a converted Daniel McKenna free. Latton responded to our bright opening in the next 10 minute period, levelling the game at 0-4 each. Our point in this period came from Sean McKenna. Sean McKenna added another point before he scored the game’s first goal to put us in front by 4 on 30 minutes. On the stroke of the half time whistle, Latton reduced the deficit back to a goal, leaving the half time score Gaeil Triucha 1-5 Latton 1-5.

Where we had the better of the first half, it was Latton who were the stronger team in the second. Now playing with the favorable breeze, Latton came out of the half time break scoring 5 points against our 1 to take the lead for the first time in the game, 0-10 to 1-6, on 42 minutes. Our point came again from corner forward Sean McKenna. Christopher McKenna levelled the scores for the third time in the game on 43 minutes. With a brace of points, Latton went ahead by the same with 11 minutes remaining. Daniel McKenna reduced our deficit to a single point, converting his second free on 51 minutes. Points were then quickly shared between the sides, Truaghs point coming from Emmet Treanor. With 6 minutes remaining, Daniel McKenna capitalised on uncertainty in the Latton back line, pouncing on a break ball and firing to the net to put us back in the lead 2-9 to 0-13. In a tense finish, and with Latton reducing our lead to the minimum on 58 minutes, the lads performed admirably to hold out for a famous victory, 2-09 to 0-14.

It was left to proud captain, Michael McCrudden, to hoist the Fergal Shannon Cup in front of a large jubilant Truagh support. This is the first title at grade 1 level where we brought silverware back to Truagh at minor level. We wish to acknowledge the lad’s fine achievement and commend the management team of Mark Kelly, Patrick Deery, Mark Counihan and John O’Brien for their work with this panel.

10/11/2009

Minors: Our minors were within seconds of claiming a league title on Saturday, only to be denied by an equalising point from Latton with the last kick of the game. Latton opened the scoring on 6 minutes with a converted free. Truagh leveled matters with our own converted free from Daniel McKenna. This was followed quickly by another Truagh point, this time from Sean McKenna. Latton leveled the game again on 11 minutes with a point from play. Truagh then took control of the remainder of the first half. Emmet Treanor and a brace of points from Daniel McKenna put Truagh ahead by 3points on 28 minutes. These points were scored around a number of unconverted goal chances we had in this period. At the end of the half, goalkeeper Matthew McKenna saved a Latton shot, tipping it over the crossbar to take the score to Gaeil Triucha 0-5 Latton 0-3 at half time.

Scores were hard to come by at the start of the second half. Truagh regretted not converting good opportunities as, against the run of play, Latton opened the scoring with a goal on 43mins. Latton stretched their lead by an additional point, converting a free to leave us down 0-5 to 1-4 on 53mins. We eventually registered our first score in the second half when Daniel McKenna expertly converted a penalty on 57 minutes to put us in the lead. Truagh added another point from Daniel McKenna to put us 2 points ahead with 2 minutes to go. Latton however responded with a point on 59 mintes to leave it 1 between the sides. Cruelly, in the only minute that was added of injury time, the referee gave Latton a  free before bringing it 20m closer to goal. The free was converted and the final whistle was subsequently blown at 1-6 each.

Our team and scorers were: Mathew McKenna; Padriag McKenna, Seamus Treanor, Fergal O’Neill; Eoghan Kelly, John McCarron, Michael McCrudden; Sean O’Brien, Darren McClennaghan; Brendan Treanor, Daniel McKenna (1-4, 1p1f), Christopher McKenna; Emmet Treanor (0-1), Jarlath Treanor, Sean McKenna (0-1). Subs: Christopher Curran for Chrsitopher McKenna (49mins), Niall Skinnader for Jarlath Treanor (53mins). Unused Subs: Barry Todd, David Kerr, Daragh McKenna, Christopher Meehan.

The replay is fixed for next Saturday in Scotstown at 1.30pm. The lads were backed by good support on Saturday last. We hope to see the same support backing the team again this weekend.

Cairde Gaeil Triucha: The club launched Cairde Gaeil Triucha in St. Mellans, on Friday night last. Cairde Gaeil Triucha has been set up in order to assist the club to construct deserving facilities for the growing needs of all the juvenile and senior teams in the parish. The response of those who attended the function was very positive, with many signing up to Cairde Gaeil Triucha on the night. Those who signed up to the scheme acknowledged the need to upgrade the facilities in St. Mellans in order to provide the best possible amenities for our juveniles and senior teams of today and future generations.

Today we are reaping the investment in St. Mellans Park of the past. It is only with new investment that our children can be better served by the club. Full details of the scheme can be read on the club website, www.truaghgaels.com, or by contacting any of the committee members.

Special guest of the night was our founding club secretary, Liam Costello. Liam Costello came to the parish as a national school teacher in Amackline in September 1957. When our club was founded in November 1958, he became our first secretary. Liam left the area in 1959 to further his teaching career. Unsuccessful efforts were made to repatriate Liam with the club during our golden jubilee celebrations last year. It was only under a chance encounter with local businessman Sean Treanor, that contact was made and he was invited as our honoured guest of the night to the club last Friday. Liam was presented with a commemorative award in recognition of being a founding member of the club. He spoke of his joy of the invitation and expressed his delight with the development of the club over the 50 years.

Paudie McKenna was also presented with a gift from the club in advance of his participation in the World Handball Championships in USA. The club wishes him the best of luck in the competition.

The free draw on the night of a 42” tv was won by Joanne Meehan, Dernacoo. Congrats Joanne. Hard luck to Gary, who’ll have to endure X-Factor for the next 3 months in full 42” wide screen.

Seniors:  We secured our senior status for 2010 with an away win against Latton last Sunday afternoon, 2-7 to 0-11. Played in very wet conditions, the game started off slowly, Latton leading by 2 points to nil after 16 minutes. Niall Feely opened the scoring for Truagh, his first of the year, with a point resultant from a mammoth run up the pitch from the full back line. A minute later, after receiving an intelligent pass from Gary Meehan, Noel Clerkin crashed the ball into the net to put us ahead. Latton responded with 3 successive points to put them in front, 1-1 to 0-5 after 23 minutes. The Gaels hit their own 3 straight scores thereafter, with the points coming from Neil McRory, Martin Owens and a converted Noel Clerkin free. Prior to the half time whistle, Latton added another point to leave the half time score Gaeil Triucha 1-4 Latton 0-6.

In the second half, Daniel Finnegan kept up his recent goal scoring form, scoring from close range on 33 minutes. Four points were then shared between the teams to leave the score 2-6 to 0-8 on 51 minutes. The Truagh points coming from a Keith Sheerin converted 45m place-kick and a Noel Clerkin free. Attempting to resurrect something from the game, Latton laid siege on the Truagh goal in the last 10 minutes, scoring 3 points to leave it a one point game with a minute to go. However a Noel Clerkin point, 2 minutes into injury time, took the game beyond Latton leaving the full time score 2-7 to 0-11 in favour of Gaeil Triucha.

Bualadh bus goes to the senior squad and management for their recent form, accumulating 10 points from a possible 12 in the last 6 games to guarantee senior status for next year.

Seniors: We exited the championship to Clontibret last Sunday 2-8 to 0-18. Played in Scotstown, we started the game slowly, registering only 0-2 in the first half against Clontibret’s 0-9. Noel Clerkin opened the scoring for us, leveling on 4 minutes. It took us 25 more minutes however until we scored our second point, a Neil McRory free.
Clontibret started the second half in the same fashion as they left the first, going 0-13 to 0-3 up after 44 minutes. Our score in that period came from Daniel Finnegan. However, we responded immensely in the last quarter of the game showing gallant effort to come close to victory. A hat trick of points from Neil McRory, Mark Counihan and John Treanor brought the difference to 7 points. Clontibret added a point before Noel Clerkin fisted to goal on 52 minutes to leave 5 points difference between the teams. Clontibret responded with a brace of points to restore their dominance, leaving the scores at 1-6 to 0-16 with 6 minutes to go. Truagh never quit though. John Treanor scored a point before the unheard happened: Rory Treanor, making up for his goal miss last week, smashed the ball to the net after a run from the full back line to leave us only 3 points down with 4 minutes to go. Daniel Finnegan then hit another point to take us within 2 points with 3 minutes to go.
It was Clontibret however who got the next crucial score, county man Conor McManus scoring his 10th point of the game before a further Clontibret point in injury time settled proceedings to leave the score at full time Gaeil Triucha 2-8 Clontibret 0-18.
Our team and scorers were: Ian Treanor; Rory Treanor (1-0), Niall Feely, Mike Treanor; Damian McRory, Keith Sheerin, Niall Coyle; Gary Feely, Neil McRory (0-2, 2f); Justin Halligan, John Treanor (0-2), Niall McMeel; Daniel Finnegan (0-2), Noel Clerkin (1-1), Mark Counihan (0-1f). U-16s: Our U-16s lost in the championship final against Castleblayney in Clontibret last Friday 0-08 to 1-13. It was a disappointing result for our lads, considering the fine first half that we enjoyed. However, we were subdued in the second half, and consequently lost out.
Niall Skinnader opened the scoring in the first minute with a point. Castleblayney followed this, replying with 2 points. The score remained static for the next 15 minutes of the game until Niall Skinnader converted a free to level the game on 21 minutes. This began our purple patch of the game where we added 4 more points to Caslteblayney’s 0-1 for the remainder of the 1st half. The Truagh scores came from Paudie McKenna, Niall Skinnader and two from Christopher McKenna to leave us 0-6 to 0-3 up at half time.

Although optimism for victory was high at half time, it was Casltleblayney who came out stronger in the second half. Castlelblayney opened the second half with 1-2 before Paudie McKenna responded with a point to bring the difference with the sides to a solitary point, 0-7 to 1-5 on 44 minutes. However, it was Castleblayney who controlled the remainder of the game registering a further 0-8 against a lone 0-1 from a Christopher McKenna ‘50’ to leave the scores 0-8 to 1-13 at full time. Hard luck to all the lads.

Seniors:  Our senior championship game against Doohamlet was postponed at the weekend. It has been provisionally re-fixed for Sunday 9th August.

Minors: We exited the minor championship in cruel fashion at Castleblayney on Wednesday night going down undeservedly 2-9 to 2-12. We made a quick impact on the game going 0-2 0-1 up on 9 minutes with scores from Brendan and Emmet Treanor. The home team responded with a purple spell midway through the first half scoring 4 points without reply. Truagh, however, showed character replying with their own 4 unanswered points from Sean O’Brien, Sean McKenna and two converted frees from Daniel McKenna. Truagh lost Chrissy Curran to a bad knee injury at this time. Before the break, Castleblayney added a brace of points to finish the half 0-7 0-6 up for the home side.

The resumption of the 2nd half saw us come out with immediate effect, Brendan Treanor adding to his tally with a point, while Sean McKenna scored a goal. Castleblayney hit a hat-trick of points to level the scores 0-10 to 1-7 on 43 minutes. We responded with our best spell of the game. Sean McKenna hit a long range point before Daniel McKenna striking a glorious point from 40 metres out. Daniel followed this with a smashing goal, culminated from a fantastically worked move from his colleagues to leave us 2-9 to 0-10 ahead on 51 minutes. The game remained tight for the next few minutes until Castleblayney were deemed to be fouled in the large square and awarded a penalty with 2 minutes to go. After converting the penalty they added another point leaving Truagh just 1 point ahead going into injury time. To the astonishment of all spectators, a second penalty was then awarded to Castleblayney, which the home side duly obliged firing to the net. A further point before the final whistle went Castleblayney’s way returning the home side victors 2-12 to 2-9.

Our team and scorers were Mathew McKenna; Barry Todd, Seamus Treanor, Paudie McKenna; Christopher Curran, John McCarron, Eoin Kelly; Darren McCleneghan, Sean O’Brien (0-1); Christopher McKenna, Daniel McKenna (1-3, 2f), Brendan Treanor (0-2); Emmet Treanor (0-1), David Kerr, Sean McKenna (1-2). Seniors:  Gaeil Triucha 1-12 Castleblayney 1-12: Truagh and Castleblayney once again shared the league points this year in an entertaining game on Wednesday night in St. Mellans.

Though Castleblayney opened the scoring early with a first minute point, Truagh started off the stronger team in the first third leading 1-4 to 0-3. Our goal came from a well converted Noel Clerkin penalty while the points came from the boots of Niall McMeel and three from Neil McRory (1 free). The game belonged to Castleblayney either side of half time, with the visitors amassing 1-9 against Truagh’s 0-3, taking the scoreboard reading to 1-12 to 1-7 in favour of ‘Blayney on 42 minutes. Truaghs points came from Martin Owens, Noel Clerkin and a Keith Sheerin point from a roving run.

Similar to our previous league game, it was the final quarter where the determination, fitness and resilience of the side came to the fore, culminating five points to level the game. Noel Clerkin was again instrumental in these scores, registering four points, two from play: each of which could have graced any football pitch in the country. The equaliser came from a free 2 minutes into injury time. Neil McRory made up the fifth score.

U-14 Final: Our U14s lost the shield final to Killanny at Blackhill last Saturday 2-5 to 3-8. Playing with a strong breeze in the first half, we started well, leading half way through the first period 1-2 to 1-1. Our points came from Cathal MacAnespie and Adam Treanor, while our goal came from a fisted Niall Rooney effort on the edge of the square. By half time however we were in arrears 1-2 to 2-1 as we conceded a goal 3 minutes before the break. Adam Treanor stroke two points within 5 minutes of the resumption of the second half to bring the teams level 1-4 to 2-1. However, Killanny utilising the assistance of the breeze very well, shot 1-6 without reply to take the game beyond Truagh. A late point by Niall Rooney followed by an opportunist goal from a Ryan Treanor free kick brought the final score to 2-5 to 3-8. Our lads were deservedly applauded off at the end for their efforts by a good support. Our team and scorers were: Noel Flood; Aaran Treanor, Caolon McGee, Aaran Murray; Shane Treanor, Cian McKenna, Paul McMeel; Cathal McAnespie (0-1), Michael McCarron; James Deery, Adam Treanor (0-3, 1f), Thomas O’Brien; Darren Sherlock, Niall Rooney (1-1), Fergal Rafferty.
