CHARITY HANDBALL TOURNAMENT

27th-28th of August

St. Mellans Handball Courts

St. Mellans complex was the venue for a Charity Handball Tournament in aid of Cancer Research Ireland last weekend (28th/29th). The tournament attracted 51 handballers from all over Monaghan to battle it out for the honours. The game play consisted of a timed 10 minute singles handball match with each player taking part in an opening placing round on Saturday the 28th; the winners of the opening round entered the Cup with the losers entering the Shield. Straight from the off it was clear that competition and technical ability of each player was at an exceptionally high level with some noticeable senior players taking an early tumble. Game of the day was without doubt the 2nd round of the cup where Monaghan senior champion Terry Kiernan locked horns with young gun Darren Doherty, it seemed Darren had the game and his ticket to the 3rd round on the Sunday sealed until a mammoth fight back in the dying seconds from Kiernan forced extra time and led him to eventually take the game 12:10 to the delight of the dazzled on looking spectators. Other noticeable absentees on Sunday were Martin Mc Entee, Colin Donnolly, Daniel Mc Kenna and Paul Cassidy, all of which would have been in the front running for honours.

Sunday’s games kicked off with the 3rd round in both the Cup and Shield. The first big wins went to Christopher Mc Kenna (P.J) who accounted for Terry Mc Elvaney 14:12 before disposing of Eoin Treanor 16:6 in the quarter final of the cup. In the other cup quarter finals Ian Treanor defeated Conor Mc Ginnity, Terry Kiernan defeated Patrick Mc Mahon and Paudy Mc Kenna disposed of David O’Reilly thus setting up two mouth watering semi final encounters composing off Christopher Mc Kenna vs. Ian Treanor and Terry Kiernan vs. Paudy Mc Kenna. The Shield was causing a similar stir with more outstanding handball, brilliant performances from Joe Mc Cabe, Patrick Mc Kenna and OJ. Mc Clave didn’t go unnoticed however it was Niall Clerkin, Eamonn Todd, Michael Mc Carron and Paul Donaghue who made it through to the semi finals. Niall Clerkin brushed Eamonn aside to progress to the final before Paul Donaghue made light work of Michael Mc Carron winning on a score line of 13:6 to set up a final meeting with Niall.

The Cup semi finals kicked off with an electric performance from Christopher Mc Kenna (P.J) that sealed a 13:4 victory over Ian Treanor who was unlucky on the day to find a player in such great form. In the other semi final world champion Paudy mc Kenna battled past the excellent Terry Kiernan on a scoreline of 12:5 thus setting up a final meeting with fellow St. Mellans club man Christopher. However the Shield final had first billing, Paul Donaghue showed all of his experience in racing into an early 14:5 lead after 7 minutes of the 15 minute final, this was simply a lead Niall couldn’t claw back and that together with a shoulder injury mid way through the final it was simply to much with Paul taking the honours 22:8, although credit must go to Niall who played on with his weaker hand to the respect of the gallery.

The Cup final started in a similar manner to that of the shield, with Christopher Mc Kenna racing into a 14:3 lead after seven minutes of play, many in the gallery felt the 11 point difference may have been to much for Paudy to claw back but claw back he did and after 13 minutes of the 15 minute final the scores were level at 16:16, with extra time looming Christopher pulled out all the stops to pick off three extra marks and take the Cavan Crystal trophy on a scoreline of 19:16.

It is important to remember that this was a Charity tournament in aid of Cancer Research Ireland , Donations are still flooding in right now but at this present time the money raised for Cancer research stands at €1093. The organisers would like to thank everyone who helped out over the weekend, the referees, the players, St. Mellans Handball club for their facilities, Maureen and Una Treanor for the food provided, Photographer Nicola Hackett, Cavan Crystal, Cancer Research Ireland and off course anyone who came down and donated. Thank you so much for your support and we’re already looking forward to next year.
